"They Shall Not Be Forgotten"
is the caption at the base of the beautiful
Tidewater Veterans Memorial
that proudly stands on 19th Street
in Virginia Beach, Virginia
My Hometown

We proudly fly the POW/MIA flag 24/7, 365 days a year.

This flag flies not only to show honor, reverence and support of our brother and sister POW/MIAs from all wars, but also as a constant reminder that the POW/MIA issue is one that should not be forgotten -- nor repeated. It is a source of remembrance that no one be left behind. That our POW/MIAs found, either dead or alive, should be brought home. That a sense of closure and peace be given to the families and friends who dearly love and miss them.

I am very proud to be a member of a community that exhibits this reverence to our heroes.

American and allied armed forces, from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq, are being held has POWs and some are listed as MIAs.

Think of the horror, torment, fate and whereabouts of Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher (Gulf War POW). We last heard he was sited, alive; the initials "MS" were found, carved in a POW prison wall, where he was once believed imprisoned. Yet, his whereabouts, and his fate, are still unknown.

  • Think and put yourself in the place of their families and friends and their dedicated vigils and pain of "not knowing". Think of the tens of hundreds of thousands that are not brought to the public eye or knowledge - and the anguish of their families. We, the American public, may not know of them, however, our government and intelligence does. They push for information, location, condition, release and repatriation of our POW/MIAs, but they don't push hard enough. Bureaucratic red tape and horizontal mambo politics are sadly the protocol on the POW/MIA issue.

    What if someone you loved was listed as a POW/MIA? Think about it ... by the Grace of God goes anyone of us!!!

    True, there has been repatriation of our missing and dead over the years, however, the process is slow and time maybe running out for those still alive.

    Empty promises, denial and deception from the leaders of the nations that hold and know of the whereabouts of our POW/MIAs are given credence - which severely hinders our progress in repatriation. This is unacceptable.

    The cries from POW/MIA advocates, friends and supporters to their local, state and federal representatives, get little (if no) attention, or, they are humored with rhetoric that prolongs the agony and results. This is unacceptable.

    According to Federal legislature, the following are the days that the POW-MIA flag should be flying:
    ** Armed Forces Day – the third Saturday in May
    ** Memorial Day – the last Monday in May
    ** Flag Day – June 14
    ** Independence Day – July 4
    ** National POW-MIA Recognition Day – the third Friday in September
    ** Veterans Day – November 11

    Petition your local and state officials to fly the POW/MIA flag 24/7 - 365 days a year. Don't take "no", or some feeble excuse, for an answer.

    State, city and county flags are flown daily as a proud reminder of the local heritage. The men and women, officially classified as POW/MIAs, are an intricate part of that heritage - of our country, in every state of the union, of every county and in their hometowns. They are our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, relatives, loved ones and friends.

    Make a difference!

    Stand up for what you believe in!

    It is right that the POW/MIA flag
    be flown from all city, state and federal buildings,
    every minute, of every hour, of every day ...
    each day of the year!!

    Learn about the POW/MIA issue and let your heart speak with conviction!

    Show the politicians:
    *** that flying the POW/MIA flag is vital to the enlightenment of our posterity;

    *** that we know of the issue, the flag history and how important it is for future generations - military and civilians;

    *** that we speak with conviction and a pure heart that the POW/MIA issue will not go away;

    *** that we have committed to seeing that all our people come home,

    *** that we never leave another POW behind and account for our MIAs and KIAs (body not recovered);

    *** that we have a responsibility to stand by, and stand up for, all those who serve our glorious nation;

    *** that we take our commitment and responsibility seriously; and

    *** that "We, The People," will never forget them.

    We Do This For Our Heroes - Past, Present & Future!

    We Do This Via Proper Protocol!

    We Do This Peacefully With Honor, Dignity & Integrity!

  • Impossible Dream???

    No!!    Difficult But Not An Impossible Dream!

    Nothing Is Impossible, If It's Wanted Badly Enough!

    To dream the impossible dream,
    To fight the unbeatable foe,
    To bear with unbearable sorrow,
    To run where the brave dare not go.

    To right the unrightable wrong,
    To love pure and chaste from afar,
    To try when your arms are too weary,
    To reach the unreachable star.

    This is my quest -- To follow that star,
    No matter how hopeless -- No matter how far.

    To fight for the right -- Without question or pause,
    To be willing to march into hell -- For a heavenly cause.

    And I know, if I'll only be true,
    To this glorious quest,
    That my heart will be peaceful and calm,
    when I'm laid to my rest.

    And the world will be better for this,
    that one man scorned and covered with scars,
    still strove with his last ounce of courage,
    To reach the unreachable star.

  • Spc. Keith Matthew Maupin

    "BAGHDAD, Iraq (June 28) -- Iraqi militants killed an American soldier they have held hostage for nearly three months, saying the killing was because the U.S. government did not change its policy in Iraq, Al-Jazeera television reported Tuesday.

    News of the killing of Spc. Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, came hours after the United States returned sovereignty in Iraq to an interim government. The report did not say when Maupin was killed.

    Maupin was captured during an ambush on a convoy west of Baghdad on April 9. Maupin was among nine Americans, seven of them contractors, who disappeared after the April 9 attack. The bodies of four civilian employees of Kellogg Brown & Root - a subsidiary of Vice President Dick Cheney's former company Halliburton - were later found in a shallow grave near the site of the attack. The body of Sgt. Elmer Krause, of Greensboro, N.C. was later found.

    The Arab satellite station aired video showing a blindfolded man sitting on the ground. Al-Jazeera said that in the next scene, gunmen shoot the man in the back of the head, in front of a hole dug in the ground. It did not show the killing.

    Maj. Willie Harris, public affairs spokesman for the Army's 88th Regional Readiness Command, said the videotape is being analyzed by the Department of Defense.

    "There is no confirmation at this time, that the tape contains footage of Matt Maupin or any other Army soldier,'' he said, adding that the Maupin family was briefed ''as to the existence of a videotape."

    Al-Jazeera said a statement was issued with the video in the name of a group calling itself ''The Sharp Sword against the Enemies of God and His Prophet.'' In the statement, the militants said they killed the soldier because the United States did not change its policies in Iraq and to avenge ''martyrs'' in iraq, Saudi Arabia and Algeria.

    One civilian driver, Thomas Hamill of Macon, Miss, was kidnapped but escaped from his captors nearly a month later. The others are missing.

    Maupin was promoted in absentia on May 1 from private first class to the rank of specialist, said Maj. Mark Magalski, a spokesman for the 633rd QM Ballation, based in Cincinnati."

    *****
    The news of the capture of Matt Maupin and the others was swift. News spread of the fate of the others, but, not another word was heard of Pfc. Maupin. We've asked repeatedly, "Where is Pfc. Keith M. Maupin?" "What happened to him?" Now, we hear this. It was stated above that this American GI POW is presumed to be Matt Maupin, although officially unconfirmed.

    Our prayers, hopes and thoughts are with the Maupin family, as well as the families and friends of all our POW/MIAs. Also, our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to all the families and friends of all our KIAs.

    We, The People, The American Patriots, continue to stand by and support our troops - at home and abroad!!

    May God bless them all and may their return home be swift and safe!!

    God bless America!!
